Requirements for ORR in Water Measurements
Information for owners and crew
The yacht is set up in what is known as “Measurement Tim”. The measurement is split in two parts. The Freeboards at the bow and stern they are measured to the water plane. These show the displacement, wetted surface and trim. The inclining is done by placing a spinnaker pole on each side deck and moving weight from one side to the other. The inclining shows the stability or righting moment. The process should take from 2 to 3 hours to complete, unless there is a problem due wind or waves.
To insure that Measurement Trim conforms to US Sailing requirements, the yacht must be set up to the following specifications.
Below Decks:
1. All water tanks must be empty
2. On Cruiser/Racers the fuel maybe either empty or full.
3. Ballast, anchors, chain, batteries must be secured to the hull.
4. Bilges, sinks, heads, and other areas were water may collect must be dry.
5. All portable gear forward of the mast must be brought aft.
6. Safety equipment, tools, navigation items, and cooking gear should be in their normal sailing positions, but not forward of the mast.
7. One set of portable deck gear e.g. sheets, guys, forguys, inch handles, and deck blocks should be on board. They will be weighed and placed on the cabin sole aft of the mast.
8. Mattresses and pillows should be in their normal place.
9. All sails and personal; gear, provisions, clothing, foul weather gear, paint fenders, warps, life raft, books, spare parts etc have to be removed.
10. If you have a center board it must be fully raise.
11. Any part of the yacht that is left on during measurement must remain on for racing.
Above Decks:
1. Black band must be painted on spars.
2. Halyards are led to the foot of the mast and returned to the winches or sailing positions.
3. The boom is centered at its lowest sailing, position, and secured against movement.
4. The mast is in its normal sailing position.
5. Spinnaker poles are on deck in the normal sailing positions.
6. Radar and pole, is your choice but cannot be removed for racing.
When the yacht is ready for measurement a date and time will be set. The wind must be calm and tidal currents slack. This usually very early in the morning or late in the evening when conditions tend to be most favorable. |
